The Historical Society of the Township of Larder Lake
presents the book
Canada's Forgotton Gold Rush: The Goldfields of Larder Lake

The edition is a history of the Larder Lake gold mining camp from 1906 to the 1950's. It tells the story of the mines and communities surrounding the lake.

The book, hard bound, 148 pages, is beautifully illustrated with about 100 photos and maps, tells the exciting and sometimes controversial story of the development of the mining camps of Larder Lake, Virginiatown and Kearns.

The Larder Lake Mining Division was the location of the first major gold rush in Ontario, pre-dating the Porcupine and Kirkland Lake, over 4000 prospectors from all over the world made their way to Larder City in 1906-07 to partake in the frenzy.

The narration is written by Vernon Dufresne and Clark Thompson, local historians, who dedicated more than 7 years of research, involving the viewing of approximately 800 reels of microfilm, various technical reports and publications, before the manuscript was written and turned over to the Township of Larder Lake for publication. Some photographs are one of a kind and rare. Of the 400 or more companies which had claims in this area only a hand full actually produced gold, the Kerr-Addison at Virginiatown, being the most famous.

The archive of computerized data both in print and photography will be available at the Larder Lake Tourist Information Centre/Museum in the summer of 2001 and will be made accessible to interested parties by appointment.

The proceeds from the sale of the book will go to specific historical endeavors in Larder Lake.
